The Committee takes note of the Government’s first report under the Convention. It notes the Government’s indication that while there are no indigenous or tribal peoples in its territory to which the Convention applies, its ratification has the aim to support the protection of their fundamental rights, and the integrity and live styles of indigenous and tribal peoples, which are important for the conservation of the biodiversity and climate action. The Government stresses that indigenous and tribal peoples often represent an exploited and discriminated population in the countries where they live. Luxembourg has sought to counter this phenomenon by strengthening, through the ratification of the present instrument, the role of indigenous peoples in society and to guarantee them the same rights as the rest of the population.
The Committee welcomes this ratification which bears witnessto the Government’s commitment to promote indigenous and tribal people’s rights. The Committee hopes that this could contribute positively towards the ratification of the Convention by other countries and to reinforce the impact and relevance of the Convention.
