Article 2(2)c) of the Convention. Prison labour. The Committee previously referred to Section 252 of the 1950 Prison Rules (Chapter 11 No. 7), under which prisoners who are under the obligation to work may be employed for the private benefit of any person. It noted that, in 2000, the Government indicated that no private prison contractors deploy prisoners to work either inside or outside of prison premises. Given the time that has passed since then, and the fact that section 252 of the Prison Rules allows for the employment of prisoners for the benefit of private entities, the Committee requests the Government to indicate if, according to current practice, prisoners undertake work for private entities. If this is the case, please provide information on the manner in which prisoners give their consent to such work and on their condition of employment.
