The Committee notes the observations of the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (JTUC-RENGO), communicated with the Government’s report.
Labour inspection and application in practice. The Committee notes, from the Government’s report, the information that, for the period January 2022 to December 2023, labour inspectors detected 12 instances of non-compliance with the minimum age provisions of the Labour Standards Act.
The Committee notes that, according to JTUC-RENGO, despite a slight increase in the number of labour inspectors, it is necessary to: (1) increase the number of labour inspectors; and (2) strengthen the capacities of the labour inspectorate to address violations of the Labour Standards Act, including violations of the minimum age for employment or work. The Committee requests the Government to provide its comments with respect to the JTUC-RENGO observations. It also requests the Government to continue to provide information on the number of violations detected with regard to child labour, and to ensure that the information includes details about the nature of the violations detected and the penalties applied. With regard to the number of labour inspectors in the country, the Committee refers to its detailed comments under the Labour Inspection Convention, 1947 (No. 81).
